Man accused of using stolen ID for nine years
A Woodstock man was arrested Wednesday in Carpentersville and accused of using another man's identity for nearly nine years, police said.
Arturo Estrada-Soto, 47, of 835 Prairie View #1G, was charged with felony identity theft, police said.
The victim, a 44-year-old Carpentersville man, had recently received a notice from the Internal Revenue Service saying he owed $12,257 in back taxes from working for Chemtool, a company the victim said never employed him.
The victim told police he thought he might be the target of identity theft in 2005 when his name, date of birth, Social Security number were used by another person to obtain employment, cell phones, apartments and medical treatment.
So he went to a home in Crystal Lake after he obtained an address, but was unable to locate anyone there.
Police said Estrada panicked when the victim came to his door in Crystal Lake and he immediately moved to Woodstock.
Detectives said they received a break in the case when a relative informed them that Estrada-Soto had been using the false information for a long time.
Estrada-Soto entered the United States illegally in 2000 and bought a fraudulent Social Security card and resident alien card with the victim's personal information.
Estrada-Soto worked two jobs in Crystal Lake from 2000 to 2005 and used the fake identification cards for both, police said.
Estrada-Soto was held in the Kane County jail on $4,000 bond with a July 18 court date in the Kane County Judicial Center.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a hold on him, police said.
