They don't get it:
The need for a fresh start and less acrimony on the Island Lake village board is apparently lost on its members. The first meeting with the new board in place since the April 7 election was canceled Thursday for lack of a quorum when three foes of the new mayor were no-shows. One trustee, John Ponio, said he was out of town, but didn't let anyone know. We hope he'd provide such a courtesy in the future. One issue to be decided that night was Mayor Debbie Herrmann's intention to fill a board vacancy with a political ally without soliciting other candidates. Business as usual.
Understanding or just too polite?
Democrat Gov. Pat Quinn said he got no complaints about his proposed tax hikes at the Park Ridge Memorial Day parade. State Rep. Rosemary Mulligan, a Des Plaines Republican, says people are plenty unhappy, but simply weren't rude to Quinn on a holiday. Who's right? Let's clear this up. Call Quinn and tell him how you think he's done: (312) 814-2121 or in Springfield at (217) 782-0244.
A misdirection?
State Sen. Susan Garrett, a Lake Forest Democrat whose district includes the North Shore and parts of Des Plaines, Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights, suggests many attempts to fix the state's political system were misdirected. "We weren't sent to jail," she said. "The governor was sent to jail. It is ironic that the focus is on the legislature when the wrongdoing was occurring at a much higher level." Is she right? Let her know: (847) 433-2002 or (217) 782-3650.
It's time to take the deal:
Paying a $20 fine for missing an 80-cent toll doesn't' seem like a bargain. But, it almost feels like one during the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority's Spring Cleaning program, which eliminates an extra $50 fine. Now's the time to pay up - before the June 30 deadline. The agency isn't known for its flexibility or understanding.
Goodbye, Driscoll:
Driscoll Catholic closed its doors this week. The Addison's school's legacy as an athletic powerhouse and source of community service won't be forgotten. Good luck to the educators still searching for work and the students who will be putting down roots in new schools this fall.
Rene, you're in our thoughts:
We join the many praying for a full recovery for Rene Douglas, one of Arlington Park's top jockeys. The 42-year-old athlete suffered a potentially paralyzing injury on the track last week. Rene, we're joining many fans in sending positive thoughts your way.
