Cary-Grove's Smith sisters choose McHenry County
Twin sisters Danielle and Breanna Smith of Cary-Grove have signed NJCAA National Letters of Intent to play for McHenry County College.
Danielle Smith, the honorary co-captain of the Daily Herald's 2007-08 All-Area girls basketball team, will play both volleyball and basketball at MCC, while Breanna will concentrate on vollehyball.
In basketball, Danielle Smith was a three year all area and all-Fox Valley Conference player. She was a 1,000-point scorer for the ,Trojans and averaged 13 points and 2.2 steals per game the past two seasons. She finished her high school career with 98 3-pointers.
In varsity volleyball over three years she was all-area and all-conference as well. Her sister Breanna was a three year varsity volleyball player who started as a sophomore, was a team captain and all-area selection her senior season and maintained "B" Honor Roll status academically.
"These two talented young women are cornerstone recruits for the MCC program," said Scots' volleyball coach Chas Kennedy. "Breanna and Danielle have the type of character and athletic ability that will represent MCC athletics in a very positive manner.
"Their attitudes, work ethic, skills and family orientation are expected to contribute greatly to our ability to continue to run a team-oriented program and to compete at the national level."
The Scots' volleyball team has won the NJCAA District Volleyball Championships and qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament in each of the past three seasons and in four of the past five years.
As for basketball, MCC coach Pam Mason echoed Kennedy.
"Danielle will be an excellent addition to an experienced group of returning players and we are very pleased that she will be joining the program to help us continue to compete for championships," Mason said. "Her basketball skills and abilities have been demonstrated by the awards and recognitions she's received both from area coaches and the media. I wish the season started tomorrow."
According to Breanna and Danielle Smith, "One of the main reasons we chose MCC was because it was a great location for our family so we could all stay in touch, and see each other's teams play. Our sister Colleen plays at C-G and our dad (Bubba) coaches at Stevenson. We also felt that McHenry County provides a great college start academically and were very impressed with both MCC coaches being very interested in us but also non-pressuring about choosing MCC."
