Briefs: Man charged with murder

An Aurora man has been charged with two counts of first degree murder for a crime that happened nearly ten years ago. Carlos Eloy Perez, 28, of the 1200 block of Superior Street, was charged Wednesday, with a warrant issued for his arrest for his involvement in the 1998 murder of Carlos Lamas Jr. Lamas was shot to death on the front porch of a residence on the 800 block of Claim Street on Aurora's near eastside. Perez is not in police custody at this time and his whereabouts are unknown. Police are asking anyone with information in regards to Perez's whereabouts to call detectives at (630)801-6712 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630)892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $1000.00 for information that leads to an arrest.

Body on Wheaton tracks

Wheaton police were seeking the family of a man who died after he was hit by a train about 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The incident occurred on the railroad tracks near Chase Street in Wheaton. The case remains under investigation. Wheaton Police Department detectives are being assisted in this death investigation by the county coroner's office. The name of the deceased was being withheld pending notification of the man's family.

No ID on body yet

Authorities still were working Thursday to confirm the body pulled from Lake Michigan was that of a missing Villa Park cabdriver who is charged with killing his parents. Though they still are waiting the Cook County medical examiner's confirmation, authorities said the body based on physical identifiers is likely Artur Shehu, 33, missing since his parents were fatally shot Jan. 7 in their Villa Park home. Shehu likely committed suicide, officials said. The fully clothed male body, which a jogger spotted at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, had a gunshot wound to the head.

Sheriff warns of scam

The DuPage County sheriff's office is warning residents of a telemarketing scam in which the caller names the Illinois Sheriffs' Association in seeking contributions. Authorities said the organization doesn't participate in phone solicitations. The caller, who may be in Florida, requests $20 to $40 donations. To avoid being scammed, the sheriff said to ask for the name, address and phone number of the group and its telemarketing firm and insist on getting everything in writing before making a pledge. If you cannot get those answers, hang up.

Earth day pickup

The West Chicago Lion's Club will help organize an Earth Day collection of unwanted computer equipment, household clothes and shoes, eyeglasses and hearing aids from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 19 at 1750 Harvester Drive. Citizenship workshop

World Relief DuPage will host a workshop for immigrants hoping to gain citizenship from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The workshop will be held at Iglesia Pentecostal Unida El Calvario, 1200 S. Summit St. in Villa Park. The program will provide free assistance to immigrants and refugees from around the world who want to apply for U.S. citizenship. Paintball kids go national

Three students from Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn advanced to the National Collegiate Paintball Association High School National Paintball Championships. Dan Taylor, Brad Trifone and Aaron Uchida will go to Lakeland, Fla., for the competition April 18-20. The Glenbard South Raiderball Paintball team took first place in the 2008 NCPA High School Regional Paintball Championships on March 29 in McLean, Ill.

National library week

Residents can take part in a Know Your Library Contest from Sunday through April 19 at the Glen Ellyn Public Library, 400 Duane St. Library lovers can pick up a sheet of questions in the adult or youth services departments anytime during the week, or print them from the library's Web site, www.gepl.org. They'll be able to test their knowledge and skills at using the library's resources.
