Lake County briefs
Route 83 info meeting
Residents and business owners are invited to a town-hall meeting today in Antioch to discuss planned improvements to Route 83. The $20 million project calls for widening the road, adding a turn lane, improving drainage and modernizing traffic signals along the 4.6-mile route from Petite Lake Road in Lake Villa to the Wisconsin state line. State Sen. Michael Bond will provide an overview of the project before public questions, comments and concerns are addressed. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at The Meeting House, 977 Main St.
Homeless to be counted
Lake County and local service providers will be taking an annual count of the homeless late today. Last year, 439 homeless people were counted as living in Lake County, but those involved in the effort think the number now is higher. An accurate count is considered important so appropriate resources can be secured and distributed. The count is part of the information needed to apply for federal funds and to determine the needs of the homeless. Recent counts have shown a large number of women experiencing homelessness.
Digital TV box seminar
Grayslake Area Public Library will host a seminar at 7 p.m. today on the switch to digital television. RadioShack representatives are slated to lead the event by answering questions and demonstrating how to connect the required digital converter box to a TV. The event will be at 100 Library Lane, just west of Route 83 and Center Street, Grayslake. For information, contact Laurel Casey or Dawn Miller at (847) 223-5313. Over-air TV broadcasters are supposed to switch to digital Feb. 17. That'll render useless millions of TVs that depend on analog antennas unless they are connected to digital converter boxes.
Rotary Club hosts chili cook-off
The Fox Lake-Round Lake Rotary Club hosts its third annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the American Legion Hall on Route 12 in Fox Lake. The fun starts at 6 p.m., while chili judging begins at 7 p.m. There will be silent and live auctions, a drawing and entertainment provided by the Johnny Gray Show. Chili will be entered from the American Legion, Dockers, Jimmy V's, The Marine Grill, the Pizza Place, R Corner Bistro and others. Tickets for the event are $10 at the door, and all proceeds will be to fund the Rotary. For information, contact Grant Township Supervisor Kay Starostovic at (847) 651-7417.
Ceremony for new library
Cook Memorial Public Library District officials will celebrate the pending construction of a new library in Vernon Hills at a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday. The event will kick off at 10 a.m. at the building's future site, on Aspen Drive south of Route 60. The building is part of a $14 million construction plan that also calls for the expansion of the main library in Libertyville.
