Wrap: Bears' victory tightens up race
Reid was red-hot.
Reid Bergstrom belted a pair of home runs Tuesday, as Lake Zurich's baseball team shut out visiting Stevenson 10-0 to move into a first-place tie with Mundelein in the North Suburban Conference Lake Division.
Joey DeBernardis pitched a 5-inning complete-game for his second shutout and sixth victory of the season.
Bergstrom finished 3-for-4 with 4 RBI to help the Bears pull even with Mundelein in the NSC Lake.
Lake Zurich (20-5, 9-2) wraps up divisional play Thursday at Stevenson. Mundelein (9-2), which lost to Warren on Tuesday, visits Warren on Thursday.
Against Stevenson, Bergstrom hit a 3-run homer in a 6-run second and smacked a solo shot in the fourth. Lake Zurich received 2 hits apiece from DeBernardis and Dan Zummo. DeBernardis and Austin Schmeisser both doubled, while Steve Cleary had a triple.
The Bears also played well in the field, turning 3 double plays. DeBernardis allowed 2 hits, while striking out three.
Stevenson fell to 12-12, 5-6.
Warren 2, Mundelein 0: Sean Kennedy cooled off the first-place Mustangs, firing a 4-hit shutout with 6 strikeouts in North Suburban Lake Division action.
Warren (13-11, 5-6) got a pinch-hit RBI single from Pat Walters, while Ryan Economos had a single and run scored. Kennedy evened his record at 4-4.
Alex Ahonen was 2-for-3 for host Mundelein (21-3, 9-2), which slipped into a first-place tie with Lake Zurich, which defeated Stevenson.
Ian McDermott pitched 4¿ innings in suffering the loss.
Carmel 5, Marian Catholic 0: Bob Lyne fired a 2-hitter for the Corsairs in East Suburban Catholic Conference action.
He also helped his own -cause with a pair of base hits. Carmel (18-2, 9-2) also got 2 hits apiece from Scott Bierman.
Vernon Hills 9, Grant 2: Zack Schwartz threw a solid 6 innings, as he gave up 6 hits and struck out six in the North Suburban Prairie Division game.
The Cougars were led offensively by Schwartz (3-for-4, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs); Brad Schnitzer (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI); Nick Mazza (3-for-4, double, 3 RBI); and Zack Freibrun (2-for-3).
Mark Argianas had a key single that sparked the Cougars' 5-run second. Vernon Hills played errorless ball, with Jeff Epner making a great catch in the outfield.
Antioch 10, Lakes 2: Logan Kent homered, singled and drove in three runs, as the visiting Sequoits improved to 12-9 and 10-1 in the North Suburban Prairie Division.
Andy Danna was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Jim Fracek went 2-for-4. Jeff Baird (4-1) threw a complete game in earning the win.
Wauconda 7, Round Lake 0: It was the Bryce Lahrman show.
Lahrman hit a 2-run homer and went the distance on the mound, striking out 14.
Wauconda (10-11, 4-6 North Suburban Prairie) received 2 hits apiece from Lahrman, Kevin Matesi, Eric Johnson (double, triple), Eric Anstedt and Jimmy Williams.
Softball
Lake Zurich 3, Stevenson 0: Katie Buczynski pitched a 1-hit shutout with 11 strikeout, as the Bears wrapped up the North Suburban Conference Lake Division championship.
Lake Zurich (19-3, 11-0) scored once in the top of the second and twice in the seventh. Kyra Boyer and Chrissie Wichmann both went 2-for-3, while Brianna Welbourn had a single and an RBI. Alex Block doubled, and Boyer tripled.
Stevenson fell to 17-10, 8-3.
Wauconda 9, Round Lake 0: Kayla Stos threw a 2-hit shutout for the host Bulldogs in North Suburban Prairie Division action.
Cara Nance and Katie Born both went 3-for-4, and Rachel Hughes was 2-for-2 for Wauconda (16-8, 8-3). Hughes and Nance both had triples, while Stos aided her cause with a double.
In the circle, Stos struck out eight and walked three in improving to 8-4.
Mundelein 7, Warren 4: The Mustangs' bats were busy and so was first baseman Katie Randau.
Jordan Lundsten paced Mundelein's offense with 3 hits, including a pair of doubles. Jessica Bjerning belted a 3-run double.
Defensively, Randau was involved in 15 putouts.
Leslie Harshey earned the win.
Vernon Hills 2, Grant 0: A day after clinching the North Suburban Prairie Division championship, the Cougars picked another win to improve to 23-3, 11-0.
Jackie Allen (14-1) pitched a complete game for the win, allowing 6 hits while striking out six and walking two.
Marci Pasquesi was 2-for-2 with 2 doubles for Vernon Hills. Alyssa Dougherty had a double and an RBI, and call-up Jessica Schwartz socked a solo home run.
Prairie Ridge 8, Grayslake North 3: Amanda Leon was 3-for-4 with a double, and Hilary Kuhl was 3-for-3 for the Knights in Fox Valley Fox Division action.
Grayslake North (7-14, 4-6) also got 2 hits apiece from Carly Borders (double) and Sam Fletcher (3 RBI).
Girls soccer
Grayslake C. 3, Huntley 2: The Rams handed the Red Raiders their first loss of the season, as Megan LeBaron scored on a free kick in overtime.
The Rams (10-7, 6-3 Fox Valley Fox) led the entire match until Huntley (18-1) scored with less than two minutes left in regulation.
LeBaron netted the game-winner, going "upper 90," coach Mike McCaulou said, with three minutes left in the first OT.
Meaghan Dalu and Kelly Jay also scored for Grayslake Central. Melissa Kuehl and Allison Mitchell had assists.
"Best win of the season so far," McCaulou said. "The girls earned this one."
CL Central 7, Grayslake N. 1: Jackie Staszczak had the lone goal for the Knights.
Maine S. 3, Stevenson 2: Jessie Gilstrap and Nicole Sodimire scored for the Patriots in their nonconference loss.
Ali Hall assisted on both goals for Stevenson (7-6).
Boys volleyball
Carmel d. Notre Dame: The host Corsairs won 25-19, 25-18 to improve to 23-9 and 7-0 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.
Josh Garwood had 8 kills and 7 solo blocks for Carmel, which has two ESCC matches remaining -- at Nazareth on Thursday and at home vs. Marist next Tuesday.
Zach Engels and Joe Sponseller added 6 and 5 kills, respectively. Sponseller also had 4 solo blocks, while Evan Linsner had 8 digs. Mike Geske lofted 10 assists and Mike Dietrich dished out seven.
