Wrap: Lake Zurich 6, Lakes 1
Katie Buczynski was busy on Friday.
The Lake Zurich senior right-hander rolled up 16 strikeouts and allowed just 3 hits and no walks, as the Bears defeated Lakes 6-1 in a North Suburban Conference softball crossover.
For good measure, Buczynski added a home run and single for the Bears.
Meanwhile, teammate Brittany Stezskal went 2-for-3 with a double, while Ashley Wright also was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
Libertyville 7, Lake Forest 3: The Wildcats broke up a tie game with a 4-run fifth inning to get the North Suburban Conference Lake Division win.
Katy Pfund went 3-for-4 on the day. All three hits were doubles.
Katie Larson and Ali Haws both had 2 hits.
Pitcher Jenna Mosconi got the win, which moved Libertyville to 6-2 on the season.
Carmel 4, Antioch 2: Held scoreless through the first six innings, Antioch came up with a rally in the seventh but ultimately fell short.
Carmel pitcher Rachel Tack was hard to crack. She rolled up 8 strikeouts in going the distance.
Kelly Cook went 2-for-3 on the day, which included a triple and 2 RBI.
Katie Cornell also had a triple for the Corsairs, who improve to 2-2 overall.
Stevenson 17, Round Lake 0: Jordan Willis and Genny Duffy combined on a 5-inning no-hitter for the host Patriots in the North Suburban Conference crossover.
Willis struck out 7 in 3 innings, with Duffy fanning a pair in her 2 innings of work.
A monster 12-run second inning paved the way for Stevenson (5-5).
The Patriots pounded out 15 hits and got 3 of them from Traci Africk, including a triple. Chipping in with 2 hits apiece were Tovah Schwartz, Annelise Docel and Rebekah Ozga.
Ozga had 2 triples and 4 RBI, while Africk and Schwartz both had 2 RBI.
Claire Kirchner belted a double for the Patriots.
Girls soccer
Grayslake C. 2, Crystal Lake C. 0: Megan LeBaron had 2 goals to lead the Rams to their first Fox Valley Conference victory.
Kat Dickson and Maggie Klees each made 2 saves in sharing the shutout. Stephanie Swearingen had an assist.
Boys volleyball
Lake County Invite: Warren and Stevenson got off to 2-0 starts Friday at Vernon Hills in bracket play, which will resume today.
Meanwhile, Mundelein and Carmel split their two matches.
Mundelein defeated Waukegan, 25-18, 25-20 but lost to Warren, 16-25, 9-25.
In their win, the Mustangs got a team-high 9 kills from John McElligott. He also had 2 blocks.
Connor Johnson and Tim Tokarz each had 11 digs. Tokarz also had 17 assists.
Against Warren, Mundelein got 4 kills and 8 digs from Mitchell Baumgartner.
Mundelein is now 4-7 on the season.
Carmel defeated North Chicago, 25-18, 25-7 but lost to Deerfield, 25-21, 23-25, 12-15.
Against North Chicago, Joe Sponseller had 10 kills while Evan Linsner had 5 digs. Setter Mike Geske had 12 assists and 3 aces.
Sponseller again led Carmel in kills by registering 7 against Deerfield. Teammates Zach Engels and Josh Garwood had 6 and 5 kills respectively.
Linsner had 6 digs and Erik Liederbach had 5. Geske and Mike Dietrich split setting duties. Geske had 13 assists while Dietrich had 10.
The Corsairs are now 5-5 on the season.
