Bauer, Lake Zurich too much for Jacobs to handle

Jacobs couldn't contain Lake Zurich standout Lydia Bauer or the Bears from going to the free throw line.

Bauer, who made all 10 of her free throws and connected on 3 bombs from beyond the 3-point arc, scored 27 points to lead the Bears to a 60-43 win over Jacobs at the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament held in Carpentersville Saturday night.

"Lydia Bauer will be one of the best players we face all season," said Jacobs coach Ed Haugens. "She can score in so many different ways and she is one heckuva player and Lake Zurich is a very good team."

The Bears (3-0), who made their first 17 free throws of the game, were 17-of-20 from the line in the first half for 85 percent and led 37-29 after 16 minutes.

"We did a great job of going aggressively to the basket in the first half and then making our free throws," said Lake Zurich coach Chris Bennett. "I didn't like our defense in the first half. We gave them way too many easy shots."

Jacobs (2-1) stayed in the game in the first half courtesy of some deadly outside shooting from Keri Bultman, who canned 3-of-3 from 3-point range and scored 13 points as the Golden Eagles trailed by 8 at intermission.

"Give Bultman credit," said Bennett. "She hit some tough 3s. But, we knew we had to tighten our defense in the second half."

The Bears stifled the Jacobs offense in the second half, holding the Golden Eagles to only 7-of-25 shooting for 28 percent.

Lake Zurich outscored Jacobs 23-14 in the second half to win by 17.

Olivia Allen added 12 for the Bears, including 8-of-12 from the line.

Bultman paced Jacobs with 19 points while Maria Tamburrino scored 13.

"The girls gave the best effort they had," said Haugens. "The things we did wrong we can fix."
