Hersey sophomore has special game

Megan Rogowski shrugged off Monday's performance as "nothing special."

What can you say, the kid's got high standards.

Hersey's sophomore guard scored 22 points - 16 in the first half - and dished out 5 assists in the No. 4 seed Huskies' 59-45 win over Glenbard North in first-round action at Wheaton North's Bill Neibch Falcon Classic.

"It's hard to stop Megan from scoring when she's on," Hersey coach Mary Fendley said. "I'm just glad I'm her coach instead of the opposing coach."

Rogowski came out hot in the first quarter with 11 points, including one jumper that touched off a 10-0 run to give the Huskies (8-3) a 22-8 lead a minute into the second. Glenbard North (4-7) pulled to within 31-23 at the half and 37-33 with 3:18 left in the third quarter on an Alyssa Jasinski jumper, but at the other end Rogowski knocked down a shot to start a Hersey stretch of 16 unanswered points. Rogowski also had a pretty feed underneath to Maddie Swan during the run.

"Warmups I was bad, I didn't have any good shots," Rogowski said, "but usually when I don't warm up good I have a good first half and score a lot."

Hersey's activity on the offensive boards burned Glenbard North repeatedly. The Huskies had 17 offensive rebounds, turning several into putbacks or kickouts for open shot attempts. Swan had 4 offensive rebounds, Megan Rogowski, Kelly Rogowski and Eileen Zydek 3 each.

"Our posts are good at kicking out," Megan Rogowski said. "They know when to go up with it and when to kick out."

"We called timeout there in the third quarter specifically addressing that we have to get the rebound, that we have to block out every player," Glenbard North coach John Chamberlain said, "but they just got to the weakside glass and stuck it in about five times to break our backs."

Amoni Reynolds scored 12 points, Jasinski 10 and Nicolette Rini 8 for Glenbard North.

"We took some steps forward today," Chamberlain said. "Our press break I thought was effective and offensively we were able to run our stuff better than we have the last couple games."
