Third quarter woes do in Jacobs

It was a third quarter to forget for Jacobs and one to remember for Johnsburg.

Jacobs, which outscored the Skyhawks in 3 of 4 quarters, was ambushed by the visitors 20-5 in the third quarter. The result was a 57-45 Johnsburg win over the Golden Eagles in a Fox Valley Conference crossover game in Algonquin Tuesday night.

"We played very well in the first half and in the fourth quarter, but the third quarter cost us," said Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle. "You have to play four good quarters to beat a good team like Johnsburg. Our shot selection was poor in the third quarter and when you are not shooting well from the outside you have to take inside and we didn't do that. Johnsburg is a good team and it is tough to get inside with CJ (Fiedorowicz) in the middle."

Jacobs, which led 21-13 after a 3-pointer by Matt Schmidt with 2:22 left in the first half, made 6-of-10 from 3-point range during the first 16 minutes. Schmidt had four 3-pointers and Nic Hofman connected on two from beyond the arc, but Johnsburg (6-0) outscored Jacobs 13-4 in the final 2 minutes and led 26-25 at intermission.

The Skyhawks continued their stellar play in the third quarter. With Johnsburg leading 29-28, the Skyhawks went on a 15-2 run to take control of the game. Mike Dixon and Derek Talbot scored 5 points each and Fiedorowicz, an Iowa recruit, scored on a pair of inside baskets as Johnsburg turned a 1-point lead into a 14-point advantage, 44-30, with 1:22 left in the third quarter.

"We made some adjustments at halftime," said Johnsburg coach Luke Ravlin. "We guarded their 3-point shooters better and executed better on offense with more patience. We played much better in the second half on both ends of the floor."

Johnsburg, which made 21-of-23 shots from the free throw line for 91 percent, was led by Dixon with 16 points. Fiedorowicz (12 rebounds, 5 blocked shots) scored 15 and Talbot scored 12.

Schmidt scored 19 with five 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles (0-4).
