Briefs: Naperville police arrest 39 motorists
Naperville police arrested 39 motorists on charges of impaired driving during a recent crackdown. Between Aug. 15 and Monday, the department participated in a nationwide push to get impaired drivers off the streets. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration joined state and local law enforcement agencies during the campaign, which featured a variety of outreach activities and $11 million in paid national advertising. Concert raises $425,000 for troops
Operation Support Our Troops Illinois recently raised $425,000 during its annual Rockin' for the Troops benefit concert. More than 12,000 people attended the event that featured Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band, American English, Tom Dreesen and Dick Biondi. Proceeds will help fund postage for care packages shipped to troops overseas and will allow the group to lease a second warehouse to continue its operations.
Firefighters assist Gulf
Four local area firefighters have been deployed to Louisiana as part of Illinois' assistance in Hurricane Gustav relief efforts. Lt. Joe DiFatta of the Downers Grove Fire Department is leading the team, which includes firefighter/paramedic John Stoeber from Downers Grove, firefigher/paramedic Steve Shink of the Naperville Fire Department and firefighter Dave Kowalski of the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District. The four will travel south in a heavy rescue squad unit from Downers Grove, and receive further orders when their unit meets with other personnel at a staging area in Effingham. The units will relieve first responders in Louisiana who have been involved with relief efforts since Hurricane Gustav made a landfall.
Glenbard West planning formalwear sale
The Glenbard West Choral Parents Association is looking for assistance with a concert dress and tuxedo sale. Anyone with an item to sell is asked to contact Marsha Webster at (630) 858-4816. Half of the sale proceeds will be return to the seller and the remainder will help support Glenbard West's choirs. Donations are needed by Sept. 22.
Cell phone donations
Cell Phones for Soldiers and the Wheaton Police Department are collecting used cell phones, with attached batteries and any accessories. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect more than 50,000 phones to help keep troops connected with their families. Phones can be dropped off at the police station, 900 W. Liberty Drive in Wheaton.
