College noted for value

Wheaton College was ranked among the top 15 on a list of Kiplinger's Personal Finance 100 best values in private institutions. The publication ranks private liberal arts colleges and universities that combine outstanding economic value with exceptional education. Wheaton was the only West suburban institution to make the list, with only four other private Illinois colleges and universities in the ranking.

Family reading night

WeGo Together for Kids, a project of West Chicago Elementary School District 33 and community partners, will sponsor its first Family Night of 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at West Chicago Middle School, 238 E. Hazel St. Open to all families in District 33, the events are designed to promote health and well-being by educating families in an enjoyable way. Police Academy offered

DuPage Sheriff John Zaruba is inviting residents to join his free Citizen Police Academy. Classes begin Feb. 11 and meet 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays for 15 weeks. Participants will get to learn more about crime-scene investigations, gang enforcement, the bomb unit, SWAT team, as well as explore the inner workings of the jail, crime lab and courthouse. Kifowit opens campaign office

The Friends of Stephanie Kifowit will hold a grand opening of her Aurora campaign office from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at 425 W. Galena. The event is open to the public and refreshments served and guests can log into their free Wi-Fi network as well.

Police name top employee

Twenty Aurora police officers from various ranks and divisions who were named "Employee or Co-Employee of the Month" in 2008 will be recognized at a special ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, in the Copley Theater at North Island Center. From those 20, the department will name the "Employee or Co-Employee of the Year."
