Briefs: Teen closer to enrollment

Tanya Washington, the Hanover Park woman whose granddaughter was denied enrollment to Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211, said she began court proceedings Friday in Chicago to get legal guardianship of her granddaughter. That could pave the way for District 211 to admit her granddaughter, Cordeirdre Mitchell, 14, into Schaumburg High School. Cordeirdre's mother, Katrina Mitchell, provided a signed and notarized affidavit relinquishing custody, Washington said. She also said she received a call from new Schaumburg High Principal Tim Little, who reportedly told her he would work to get the paperwork processed quickly so that, if everything falls into place, Cordeirdre might be able to start school with the rest of her class Wednesday. "He said his focus is on Cordeirdre and getting her situated," said Washington. A District 211 spokesman said its legal counsel has begun working with the Illinois State Board of Education to ensure its transfer student residency policy is compliant with state code.

Police seeking suspects

Buffalo Grove police released sketches of two suspects involved in an armed robbery on Tuesday. The police responded to the Smoke Hut, 1140 W. Lake Cook Road, around 7:30 p.m. that day. The clerk said the two men entered the store and requested a carton of cigarettes. As the clerk went to find the cigarettes, one man displayed a handgun and ordered her to the back of the store where her wrists and ankles were bound with duct tape and she was placed in a bathroom, police said. The clerk was able to free herself after the two men left the store; she was checked out by paramedics and found to be unhurt. Police said an undetermined amount of money estimated to be in the $100s was taken. The first suspect is about 35 years old, 6 feet tall and heavyset, police said. The second suspect is about 25 years old, 5 feet to 5-feet 5-inches tall with a thin build, police said. Anyone with information should call the police at (847) 459-2560.

Man charged with stalking

A Chicago man was arrested by Mount Prospect police, who said he was stalking his ex-girlfriend. Spiro P. Kyurov, 30, of 5227 N. Oakview Ave., has been charged with one count of criminal trespass to land, a misdemeanor, and one count of stalking, a class 4 felony. According to police, at around 12:23 a.m. Thursday, officers saw Kyurov driving in the parking lot of Famous Freddie's Roadhouse, 1799 S. Busse Road, Mount Prospect. The vehicle repeatedly drove in and out of the parking lot with its lights off before finally parking in front of the establishment's entrance. Police said an officer approached Kyurov and subsequently learned he was watching for his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend, an employee there. Police said they also learned that Kyurov had previously made threats of bodily harm to her and had watched out for her at least once in the past. Authorities said he was also banned from Famous Freddie's in July. Kyurov appeared before a Cook County judge Friday. Judge Joseph Urso set bond at $40,000 and scheduled a court date for Sept. 14.
