Shave your head; support cancer-stricken kids

A St. Baldrick's Foundation event - raising money for cancer research - will be held Friday, March 6 at John Barleycorn, 1100 American Lane Schaumburg. The head-shavings will commence upstairs at 3 p.m.

Last year's event raised more than $177,000 and shaved more than 160 heads. Raffles, a silent auction, music, food, drinks, along with freshly shaved heads will be on display. All ages are welcome.

Since its inception seven years ago, St. Baldrick's events have raised more than $51 million for childhood cancer research.

ECC hosts event on academic excellence

Elgin Community College hosts its fifth annual Academic Excellence Reception for college-bound high school students seeking programs that challenge them academically and personally, 4-5:30 p.m. March 11, in the Fox Valley University and Business Center on the ECC main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. It is open to high school students who graduate in the top 25 percent of their class, their parents and others seeking an academic challenge.

Aspects of the Academic Excellence program include the honors program, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, the emerging leaders program, the study abroad program, scholarships for academically talented students and social activities. Attendees also meet faculty and students who participate in these programs.

CFC yearly meeting March 5 at library

Citizens for Conservation's annual meeting, "A Creek Runs Through It - Protecting Our Unique Landscape," will be held at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at the Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy.

See displays on The International Year of Astronomy, Native Seed Gardeners, Gem Miners First Lego League Team, Leave No Child Inside, Flint Creek Watershed Partnership and Native Plants in Home Landscaping, followed at 7 p.m. by the business meeting, program and awards.

The meeting will highlight local conservation, restoration and preservation efforts and will celebrate accomplishments of noted area conservationists. The public is invited. Call (847) 382-7283.

Professionals asked to join Career Day

Helen Keller Junior High in Schaumburg, will host a career day from 7:30-10:30 a.m. April 29, and is looking for professionals to volunteer for a 15-20 minute presentation and 10-15 minute question answer sessions for the students. Students will rotate classrooms every 30 minutes.
