Crystal Lake South runs past Dundee-Crown
Kenny King's career receiving night helped Crystal Lake South shake its lone stigma.
Many feel that the Gators are a second-half team, but after King caught 3 passes for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns, South was moving as quickly as possible.
Quarterback Drew Ormseth finished the first half with 5 touchdowns as the Gators celebrated Homecoming with a 40-0 victory over Dundee-Crown in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division opener for both teams.
"All week we've been hearing things about coming out slow in games," said King, who now has 3 touchdowns on the season. "I think this helped our reputation. I usually come out slow but tonight, I came out fast."
King caught a 22-yard pass from Ormseth with 9:44 left in the first quarter to give South (5-0, 1-0) an initial lead. The duo would hook up on a 57-yard bomb with 10:59 left in the second half to extend South's lead to 19-0. Ormseth (5 of 8, 156 yards, 3 touchdowns), added an 11-yard scoring pass to Kenny Bambini with 7:07 left in the first half to extend the Gator's lead to 26-0.
But the Gators did not let up on the Chargers (0-5, 0-1).
Brad Walovitch took a Dundee-Crown punt 61 yards back to the end zone to extend South's lead. After converting the extra point Walovitch, who had returned a punt for a touchdown earlier and had the play called back because of a penalty, put South up 33-0.
Ormseth guaranteed the second-half running clock after running for his second 1-yard touchdown of the game just 3 seconds before halftime.
"We took the ball on offense and went down and scored," said Gators' coach Chuck Ahsmann, who was honored as the Chicago Bears Coach of the Week. "(King) is fast. You scout the other team and we felt we had a good match up with Kenny."
South's defense did its part holding D-C to minus 12 yards on 16 first-half plays. The Gators gave up just 2 first downs in the first half. The Chargers finished the game with 30 yards on the ground on 27 carries.
Dundee-Crown may have suffered more than just a conference loss on Friday
Starting running back Danny Sharp went down with a right ankle injury just before halftime. Making things worse, second-string back Ardian Asani also left the game with an injury and did not return.
"Now we're scrambling around," Chargers' coach Mike Davis said. "We had to go from one style of offense to another."
