Summer lawn concert:ABBA Salute will perform the last concert of the summer lawn concert series at Loyola University Chicago's Cuneo Mansion and Gardens, 1350 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills, on Wednesday, Aug. 11. The ABBA tribute band presents the music of one of the most recognizable pop bands in history. Tickets can be purchased on site only, on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission is $10 per person with children under 12 free. Free parking also is available. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The concert is scheduled for 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. If canceled due to weather, the reschedule date will be Wednesday, Aug. 18, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.DARE ceremony in Gurnee:An awards ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Saturday to recognize Woodland Elementary District 50 students who wrote winning essays during the spring session. Gurnee's Citizens Police Academy, in partnership with Woodland, already has honored the 34 pupils with brick pavers. The pavers have been installed at "The Guardian" statue outside Gurnee police headquarters. The winners were selected because of what officials say were high quality essays as part of the DARE program. Saturday's ceremony will be in front of the Gurnee police station and open to the public. Mayor Kristina Kovarik, Police Chief Robert Jones and other officials are expected to speak and present the awards to the students. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with a police headquarters open house.Bat viewing program:Lakewood Forest Preserve is offering a chance to view a colony of little brown bats as they awaken Saturday evening. A preserve naturalist will explain their habitats and their lifestyle from 7:30 to 9 p.m. near Shelter E. The program costs $8 for Lake County residents ages 4 and older. Adult supervision is required. Lakewood Forest Preserve is located off Route 176, just west of Fairfield Road in Wauconda.
