Hit the flag, save the turf

Golf Center Des Plaines is one of several Northwest suburban golf courses presenting BigPar3 2010, the world's largest closest to the flagstick contest on Aug. 28. No registration is required.

The contest is sponsored by the Illinois Turfgrass Foundation, a 51-year-old organization dedicated to improving the quality of golf course grass. Participants will be asked to donate $10 to help with their mission. In addition to Golf Center Des Plaines, another dozen local courses will participate, including the Mount Prospect Golf Club, Poplar Creek Country Club, Aurora Country Club and Inverness Golf Club.

Scores will be tallied from all participating courses and prizes awarded in six categories. Golf Center Des Plaines is at 353 N. River Road, just north of Golf and River roads in Des Plaines. (847) 803-4653.
