Palatine man guilty of sex with teen

A Palatine man was sentenced to two years of probation and six months in jail Monday for having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Rene Ortiz, 21, of the 2000 block of Rand Road, pleaded guilty in McHenry County court to one count of aggravated battery and was sentenced according to the terms of an agreement with prosecutors.

Ortiz was arrested in April after the mother of a 15-year-old girl went to police with allegations of sexual abuse. Investigators later learned the two had sex in October 2009, resulting in the victim becoming pregnant.

On Monday, prosecutors said Ortiz had already completed his jail sentence while his case was pending, but he now faces deportation.

In addition, Judge Joseph Condon, who accepted the plea, ordered Ortiz to pay a $250 fine and complete any counseling that might arise from probation and related evaluations.

Had Ortiz been convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, as he was initially charged, he would have faced up to seven years in prison.
