Barrington's patience is rewarded; Schaumburg earns a split

The four teams at Barrington's softball quad waited out the weather Saturday.

And before darkness settled in, the host Fillies, Schaumburg, Antioch and Lane Tech got to play their two games each.

Originally scheduled for an 11 a.m. start, action began around 2 p.m. and wrapped up near 7 p.m.

"I appreciate the patience that all the teams showed while our fine maintenance crew prepared the field for four varsity games," said Barrington coach Perry Peterson. "And our parents did a great job providing food for more than 300 people on a challenging weather day."

The Fillies were up to the their two challenges, defeating Antioch 6-5 and Lane Tech 7-0.

Barrington (8-1) scored all 6 of its runs in the fourth inning against Northwestern recruit Olivia Duehr, a junior right-hander for Antioch (2-2).

The big inning consisted of a 2-run double by freshman Loren Krzysko and RBI doubles by junior Kiersten Tinkoff, junior Liz Owen and sophomore Jordan Wekony.

Junior Colleen Shandley, who went 3-for-3 in the game, had a pair of singles in the inning, one which drove in the sixth and game-winning run.

"This was really a big game for us," Shandley said. "We knew everyone had to play confident to win.

"We came out real aggressive in that (6-run) inning. No one was playing tentatively, and that's why were able to have the big inning."

Junior Kiley Dolezal (8-1) threw a complete game against Antioch, then came back and struck out five and walked none in the first 3 innings against Lane Tech to get that win.

Wekony went the next 3 innings with 5 strikeouts and Krzysko pitched the seventh.

Top hitters for Barrington in the night cap were Dolezal (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Shandley (2-for-4, walk) and Owen (2-for-2, walk).

Schaumburg 12, Lane Tech 2 (5 innings): Senior third baseman Theresa McGreevy belted her second homer of the season, a 2-run blast in the third inning which easily cleared the center-field fence.

"In the inning before, a girl was coming to third after stealing second. I missed the throw and she went home to score," McGreevy said.

"I wanted to redeem myself for that. I just wanted to get a hit. I didn't know it was a homer until I saw (junior teammate) Becca Thompson slowing down at second base."

Sophomore Alyssa Lancaster struck out seven in the first 3 innings to earn the win. Rachel Kakareka had 1 strikeout in the final 2 innings.

Shannon Giovannone (2-for-3) and Thompson (2-for-3, walk) were multiple hitters for the Saxons.

Antioch 6, Schaumburg 5 (11 innings): Antioch, which features three D-I players (Northwestern, Georgetown and Loyola recruits), scored 5 runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.

Senior Nicole Chase and sophomore Courtney Raschk hit back-to-back two-out solo homers for Schaumburg (4-2) in the second inning. Junior teammate Amber McCoy led off the fourth with another solo homer.

Lancaster (4-2) threw all 11 innings, striking out two and walking one.

Raschk (3-for-5, home run, double, 2 RBI), senior Aly Poehlmann (3-for-5, double), Lancaster (2-for-6), Thompson (2-for-5, double) and junior Alexis Carravetta (2-for-6) were the other top hitters for the Saxons.

"We played the best defense we have all season," said Saxons coach Erin Malinowski, whose team visits Larkin on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
