Hanover Park man held in Streamwood shooting
A 19-year-old Hanover Park man is being held on a $250,000 bond after police charged him with attempted murder in connection with what they called a gang-related shooting Sunday in Streamwood.
Jose Hernandez, of the 2000 block of Burr Oak Lane in Hanover Park, appeared in court Tuesday in Rolling Meadows.
Police said Hernandez fired a sawed-off shotgun at a 20-year-old man around 5:30 p.m. Sunday near an outdoor basketball court around Club Tree Drive and Valley Lane.
Police called the incident an isolated matter between gang members.
Hernandez' attorney, Assistant Public Defender Salvatore Spaccaferro, described it differently.
"We believe this matter to be a case of self-defense," Spaccaferro said, but did not elaborate.
Prosecutors said Hernandez was driving in the area when he saw the victim playing basketball. Hernandez thought the man was a rival gang member, said a state's attorney spokeswoman. He then drove to a home in Hanover Park to retrieve a shotgun shell.
Hernandez then returned to Streamwood, pointed the shotgun out the car window and shot at the victim, prosecutors said.
Authorities did not indicate if Hernandez knew the victim or if he was specifically targeting him.
The victim had wounds to his thighs, forearm and hands and was treated and released from St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, prosecutors said.
Hernandez was charged with attempted murder and aggravated discharged of a firearm.
Bartlett police arrested Hernandez later Sunday near Lake Street and Walnut Drive after stopping his car, police said. Bartlett police also took a second suspect - a juvenile - into custody and they found a shotgun in the car.
Streamwood police took the pair into custody and the juvenile was later released without charges, police said. No information about the juvenile was released in court.
