Two arrested after man killed, girlfriend wounded in Mundelein shooting

Two people were in custody Tuesday night following a shooting in Mundelein that left a local man dead and his girlfriend wounded, police said.

No charges had been filed as of early Tuesday night. The victims’ identities haven’t been released by police.

The victims and the two people in custody knew each other, said Christopher Covelli, spokesperson for the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute.

The shooting occurred in an apartment on the 500 block of Deepwoods Drive. The female victim and a witness called 911 about 11:40 a.m. to report the shooting, Covelli said.

Mundelein police arrived and found the victims, who lived together in the apartment, Covelli said.

Both were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The man was pronounced dead there, Covelli said; the woman is expected to survive.

The female victim told police the shooter left in a black Chevrolet Blazer. Illinois State Police subsequently spotted the Blazer headed south on the Bishop Ford Expressway near 130th Street on Chicago’s Far South Side, stopped it and arrested the man and woman inside, Covelli said.

Police also seized the Blazer and were preparing to search it Tuesday night for weapons or other evidence, Covelli said.

The shooting is under investigation by Mundelein police and the task force. As of Tuesday afternoon, the building in which the shooting occurred was cordoned off with yellow tape. Deepwoods Drive east of Lake Street was cordoned off, too.
