Man nabbed in Bolingbrook bank robbery

Derek Ortiz, 33, of the 7900 block of Chelsea Drive in Woodridge, was arrested and charged with a Bolingbrook bank robbery Friday.

According to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court Monday, Ortiz robbed the U.S. Bank inside the Meijer store at 755 E. Broughton Rd. at about 7:45 p.m. Friday, and he is a suspect in several other suburban bank robberies.

Authorities said he brandished a gun and told the cashier he wanted "hundreds" and made off with what was accounted to be $3,950.

A Bolingbrook K-9 officer responding to the robbery observed a car matching the description of a getaway car used in other local bank robberies and attempted to stop it. The car fled onto northbound I-55 and was chased several miles before Ortiz was stopped and apprehended on the 5000 block of West Washington Street in Chicago.

A gun and cap matching those used in the robbery were recovered, authorities said.

An FBI special agent testified Ortiz matched the description of a person shown entering and leaving the Meijer on a security camera.

Ortiz is believed responsible for a handful of other supermarket bank robberies over the last two months, the FBI added.

An FBI spokeswoman said only a portion of the money was recovered and that some of it had apparently been thrown out the window during the car chase.
