Former Mount Prospect dentist sentenced for child pornography

John Mantanes, 50, formerly of Park Ridge and who once had a Mount Prospect dental practice, was sentenced to 17 1/2 years in federal prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to receiving child pornography.

"My sentence is meant in no uncertain terms to incapacitate you," said U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo in issuing the sentence in federal court in Chicago.

There were no allegations made that Mantanes had ever engaged in actual child abuse, but the virulent nature of the 1,380 images and 141 videos found in his collection of child pornography - including children as young as infants engaging in sexual conduct - led to the harsh sentence.

Mantanes had faced a 20-year maximum sentence on the charge, and will have to serve at least 85 percent of the 210 months. The judge imposed an additional five-year term of court supervision upon release and noted that by then Mantanes will be in his late 60s.

Mantanes pleaded guilty last September after being arrested just over a year ago.

"This case stands as an example that wading into the criminal marketplace of child pornography can result ultimately in lengthy prison sentences," said U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald.

Mantanes was immediately taken into federal custody.
