Dundee-Crown runs away with Jacobs

Neither Carlin Faulkner nor Ali Sanders have any issues with firing up shots from behind the 3-point arc.

Faulkner went 3-for-3 and Sanders hit her one attempt in the opening 4 minutes of the second half Tuesday night to help the Dundee-Crown girls basketball team run away from Jacobs in a 56-35 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory in Carpentersville.

“They were in a zone. It’s much easier to shoot off. But you’ve still got to work hard. I was just on, I guess,” said Faulkner, a senior. “You’ve got to keep shooting when you’re on.”

Faulkner hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points. Sanders hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.

“The last few games (Faulkner) has really been hot,” D-C coach Michelle Russell said. “When try to get the ball in her hands. When she’s been open she’s been hitting them lately. She and Sanders is a nice 1-2 punch out on the perimeter.”

The game was close late in the first quarter as the Chargers (3-4, 1-0) led the Golden Eagles, 14-11. In the final 35 seconds of the quarter, a Sanders steal led to a Jillian Wiechmann basket and Faulkner had a steal and layup to increase the lead to 18-11.

Jacobs (0-8, 0-1) did not hit a field goal in the second quarter, going 0-for-7, and trailed 28-16 at halftime.

“We can’t go out and play with no baskets like we did in the (second quarter),” Jacobs coach Keith Chuipek said.

Faulkner and Sanders’ outside shooting and 4 offensive rebounds and putbacks increase D-C’s advantage to 26, 48-22, with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles wouldn’t get any closer than 19 in the fourth quarter. Jessica Tennant led Jacobs with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Lauren Grady and Amy Becker each added 5 points.

Diamond Williams had 9 points and 5 rebounds for the Chargers. Wiechmann added 8 points as the D-C earned its second consecutive victory over its District 300 rivals after several years of struggles.

“It’s a big rivalry still. It has gone down a little bit in the past few years,” Sanders said. “We have the biggest crowd when we play Jacobs. We have a sense of pride if we win.”
