Wheaton Academy tops Streamwood

The Wheaton Academy Warriors boys basketball team continued its great start to the season Tuesday night.

The Warriors (2-0) defeated the Streamwood Sabres 66-42 in the second round of the Thanksgiving tournament at Wheaton Academy. The Warriors were strong right from the start, as they began the game with a 10-0 run, and would continue to keep their lead strong throughout the first half. The Sabres put together some offense to end the half with a 5-0 run, but would still trail by 15 heading into the locker room at halftime.

“Our emphasis tonight was that once we got a lead, we didn’t want to let up,” said Wheaton Academy head coach Paul Ferguson. “I thought we did a good job of that tonight.”

Senior guard Cameron Harvey led the way for the Warriors with 15 points; while senior guard Drew Sandberg put up 13 points, including two 3-pointers. For Streamwood, senior Julius Evans led the team with 11 points, while senior guard Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle notched 10 points.

The Warriors did a particularly good job on the defensive end, tallying 15 steals on the evening.

Wheaton Academy would continue to hold its lead, and would extend it to 20 to end the third quarter. with seconds to go in the game, Warriors junior guard Ryan Bugh came into the game and nailed a 3-pointer to secure the 24-point victory.

Streamwood head coach Tim Jones knew his team could have played much better than it did to get back into the game in the second quarter.

“We had a horrible start,” said Jones. “We were turning the ball over too many times. We were still in the ballgame when it was 14-7, but we just didn’t get ourselves back into it by calming ourselves down and relying on our guys that can do the job. Our seniors can play much better than that.”

Ferguson was glad to get the victory in front of the incredible student section at Wheaton Academy.

“It was awesome,” he said. “Our student section was phenomenal tonight. They brought us a lot of energy, and our guys fed off that energy.”
