Carmel takes fifth in Class 3A

Sophomore Jackson Wietecha fired a 2-over 74, finishing in eighth place and leading Carmel Catholic’s boys golf team to fifth in the Class 3A state tournament in downstate Bloomington on Saturday.

Carmel shot a two-day total of 641.

Led by senior Joe Willis, Lake Forest captured the state championship with a 612, nine shots better than Lyons at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course. Loyola Academy (626) and Hinsdale Central (632) finished third and fourth.

Willis also won the individual title, shooting an even-par 144 to finish five shots ahead of Charlie Netzel of Lyons.

Carmel also counted the rounds Saturday of Tommy Schofield (79), Brian Miller (84) and Mike Wilkinson (88).

Stevenson junior Reed Aren tied for 16th. Schofield and Miller finished in a tie for 25th. Mundelein junior Grant Heelan tied for 38th.

Class 2A

At Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University, Vernon Hills (671) finished 10th out of 12 teams. Eric Swanson and Jake Zoll shot 78 and 79, respectively, to lead the Cougars on Day 2. Chris Edwards carded an 83, and Russell Hutson had an 85.

Lakes senior Matt Hirsch tied for 25th.
