D211 to hold classes on Lincoln, Pulaski birthdays
Members of District 211's board voted Thursday to hold classes on the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Casimir Pulaski for the 2012-2013 school year.
For years, the district has taken advantage of state waivers to hold classes on Feb. 12, Lincoln's birthday, and on the first Monday in March, for Pulaski's birthday. Now, however, school boards no longer need to apply for a waiver, as long as there is a public hearing for the proposal.
District 211's proposal noted that holding school on Lincoln and Pulaski's birthdays “permits special emphasis on these two great American individuals on the dates set aside for their recognition, providing a more effective educational environment.”
