A mighty cheer for the Blackhawks
Red and black were the colors of choice Friday at Hawthorn School South.
Staff and young Blackhawks fans at the Vernon Hills school were energized by a choreographed cheer fashioned by a group of 5th graders (and one fourth grader) featured on Good Morning Hawthorn, the daily closed-circuit newscast.
The ditty begins with: "He shoots! He scores!" and on cue the group follows with an imitation of the foghorn played for the crowd when the home team puts the puck in the net.
"We haven't won the cup in years. Let's bring it back home right here," are other lines that fans of all ages hope comes true as the Blackhawks on Saturday host the Philadelphia Flyers in the first game of the Stanley Cup Finals.
The group of nine spent recess, gym and music class honing the act, which also was played over the loudspeaker for the entire school at the end of the day Friday.
Fifth grader Anna Rose Polisky was the primary author. She became a hockey fan about a year ago, after her dad got a job with the Chicago Wolves.
"We like watching hockey now," according to her mom, Liz, who took a video of a performance for posterity.
Noah Reinstein, a 10-year-old fourth grader, who was part of the cheer group, said his favorite Hawk is Patrick Kane, "because he scores a lot of goals and I like the players who score goals."
He predicted a Hawks series victory in five or six games.
"I'm pretty sure. I have a positive feeling they're going to win."
