Man charged in Crystal Lake overdose death
A 23-year-old Lake in the Hills man is accused of providing the heroin that resulted in a fatal overdose in Crystal Lake earlier this year.
Philip D. Neumann, of the 100 block of Deer Path, is charged with drug-induced homicide, a felony that carries a six-year minimum sentence and a 30-year maximum, according to court records.
McHenry County authorities served Neumann Tuesday with a warrant while he was in the Kane County jail for an unrelated drug charge out of Carpentersville.
On Jan. 30, Crystal Lake police were called to the 1300 block of Boxwood Drive for an unresponsive 24-year-old. Sean P. Hopman was taken to Woodstock Memorial Hospital, where he died.
“We’re alleging (Neumann) sold the victim the drugs that ultimately took his life,” Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Gene Lowrey said. “It’s another chapter in a very tragic situation.”
Neumann was paroled from prison June 9 on a burglary conviction and arrested by Carpentersville police July 8 for possession of more than 15 grams of cocaine, court records show.
He is due in court on that charge Sept. 2 and then Sept. 6 for the drug-induced homicide charge.
Neumann was being held on $500,000 bail.
