Silver Connection helps local veterans
A pair of women have made it their business to ensure local veterans know which health services they are entitled to for serving their country.
Jennifer Prell and Pat O'Dey-Evans are co-presidents of A Silver Connection, an organization they started nearly five years ago in Cary.
The organization focuses on educating seniors about the things that affect them. As part of that, Prell, of Cary and O'Dey-Evans, of Rolling Meadows, have included free outreach to elderly veterans and their families.
“The VA's not obligated to say anything about (benefits) so we're telling everybody,” Prell said, adding that the knowledge makes a huge difference in the health care options their audience selects. “We talk about it everywhere.”
The women, the children of fathers who served in the military, have visited countless places to reach the elderly, whether it was in hospitals, assisted-living facilities and retirement homes.
They primarily focus on veterans 65 years and older, but the spouses of people married to a veteran who has since died are also entitled to receive up to $1,057 a month, O'Dey-Evans said.
Their next veteran program will be a networking event for military personnel, veterans and the people who support them is scheduled for 5 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Penny Road Pub in Barrington. The group meets the first Tuesday of every month.
