VH advances to sectional

Vernon Hills d. Highland Park: At Antioch, Mikey Kelly slammed 12 kills, as the fourth-seeded Cougars outlasted the No. 5 seed 25-21, 25-21.

Vernon Hills (33-4) advances to the Warren sectional and will face top-seeded Buffalo Grove at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Thomas Robinson and Martin Niemczewski added 8 and 7 kills, respectively, for Vernon Hills. Garrett Kubacki had 5 kills, 9 digs and 2 blocks, while Justin Opitz set 70 of 70 with 32 assists. The Cougars also got 4 blocks from Joseph Ho and 10 digs from David Swanson.

“The guys really adjusted well after slow starts in both sets,” Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry said. “Mikey Kelly was especially strong late. David Swanson went on a great service run in the first set and played stellar defense all night.”
