West Chicago's Monroe second in 3-point shootout
NORMAL -- Maybe a hot-shooting warmup was a sign to Claire Monroe that it wasn't to be her day.
Monroe couldn't miss in the warmups for the Queen of the Hill 3-point shootout at Redbird Arena. But the West Chicago junior's 7 makes out of 15 attempts were eclipsed by Class 3A champion Erin Benn of Illiana Christian's 11.
"I guess it's like what they say: 'bad warmup, good game,'" Monroe said, "because I had a good warmup but didn't shoot so well."
Monroe was the first shooter in Friday's 4A shootout and hit a total of 10 that couldn't be matched. She was first up again Saturday.
"I like that I was able to set the pace on Friday," Monroe said, "but at the same time the wait for the rest of the shooters to go is so long. Today I wasn't expecting to go first; I thought I would go last. Maybe that threw me off."
Monroe did make a "money ball" that netted a $500 scholarship for her school.
"Oh yeah, it was a great experience," Monroe said. "I'm glad I made it this far."
