Author to discuss integrative medicine

Centegra Health System will welcome author Dr. Keith Block for a special evening program to discuss his new book, "Life Over Cancer" and his more than 30 years of tailoring cancer care to people's individual needs. The program will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7 at the McHenry County College Conference Center, 8900 Route 14, in Crystal Lake.

Block is considered a national leader in integrative therapies and is the co-founder of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment. The Block Center specializes in the treatment of the entire range of cancers and provides a caring environment that emphasizes the unique physical and psychological qualities of each person. The innovative programs pioneered by Block help patients boost treatment effectiveness, reduce treatment side effects and avoid disease recurrence. People also learn how to regain and improve physical strength and flexibility and preserve their dignity.

In his book, "Life Over Cancer," Block discusses integrative medicine and the strategies he uses to treat people who have been diagnosed with cancer. His care combines medications, nutritional intervention and mind-body therapies.

Dr. Terrence Bugno, a radiation oncologist and independent physician on staff at Centegra Health System, will lead a question-and-answer session. In addition to radiation oncology, Bugno has a special interest in integrative therapies and is board-certified in holistic medicine.

Centegra Health System and the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation partner year-round to raise awareness of the importance of early cancer detection. The Get Checked! Program provides information on lifestyle changes and guidelines for routine screenings that can make a big difference in one's life. The Gavers Cancer Resource Library also is featured in Centegra Sage Cancer Center in McHenry and offers touch-screen computers, a library inventory of books, journals and booklets.
