Dundee-Crown, Bernhard upend D300 rival Jacobs

Sean Bernhard was sick of losing. So the Dundee-Crown senior guard did something about.

Scoring 16 points, including 6 in overtime, Bernhard was a key figure in the Chargers' 60-52 overtime win over District 300 rival Jacobs in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball game in Algonquin Tuesday night.

It was only the Chargers' second win of the season against 15 losses. D-C is 1-4 FVC Valley play.

Bernhard, who made 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the extra session, also dealt out 5 assists and had 4 steals.

"This is our best game of the season by far," said Bernhard. "We clicked on all cylinders for four quarters and into the overtime. We played with great intensity the entire game. We really wanted this one."

In the overtime, the Chargers took the lead for good 46-44 on a pair of free throws by Kevin Cronin with 3:04 remaining. D-C, which got field goals from Bernhard, Cronin and Jamel Kimbrough in the extra session, made 10-of-10 from the line in the 4-minute OT period to seal the win.

Along with Bernhard's 4-of-4 effort from the line, Cronin also made all 4 of his free throws while Nathan Kirchoff was 2-of-2 from the stripe.

"We struggled at the free throw line during regulation, but the kids made their free throws when they had to," said Dundee-Crown coach Lance Huber. "They battled and fought so hard the entire game. It was a pretty solid effort for 36 minutes. This win should give us confidence for the rest of the season."

Ryan Smith led the Chargers with 18 points, all in the first 3 quarters. He was 4-of-6 from the 3-point arch, collected 9 rebounds and dished out 5 assists.

"I was getting great passes from my teammates," said Smith. "I felt good shooting the ball. We handled the pressure well tonight and didn't break down at the end of the game when the pressure was on."

Kimbrough added 11 points and 6 rebounds for the winners.

Jacobs (3-14, 0-3) had a chance to win in regulation, but Matt Schmidt's off balance shot was short.

"It wasn't the shot we wanted," said Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle. "The game was there for the taking and we didn't take it. It was the lowest point in a low season."
