Battle, Ruffolo, Antoine in Dist. 220

Daily Herald Editorial Board

Going into the election, the story in Barrington Unit District 220 is a familiar one — a tale of economic uncertainties and the need for budget cuts. The school board, under the leadership of board President Brian Battle, has made the best of tough times. His years of experience, coupled with the steady way he has guided the board, make him a smart choice for re-election.

Joining him on the ballot for the three seats are Joseph Ruffolo, Thomas Antoine and Richard Burkhart. Ruffolo, a teacher, naturally has a good grasp of education issues and could be a great addition to the board. He would, however, have to temper his understandably protective instincts about teachers with regards to future contract negotiations.

Burkhart and Antoine are running as a slate with write-in candidate James Mayer. They advocate linking teachers’ salaries to test scores, an idea worth exploring — albeit cautiously. Of the three, we think Antoine would make the strongest contribution to the board. His background as a project manager in the construction industry gives him key experience with budgets and contracts.

We endorse Battle, Ruffolo and Antoine.
