Schaumburg woman charged with theft from Bensenville business

A 48-year-old Schaumburg woman charged with stealing more than $175,000 from her Bensenville employer over the course of seven years is being held on $25,000 bail in DuPage County.

Rungnapa Correia, of the 400 block of Kavalier Court, is charged with theft of $100,000 to $500,000.

Prosecutors say Correia was employed as an accountant for Yukikiaze Auto from 2002 until the business closed in 2017. As part of her duties, Correia was responsible for the payroll.

Prosecutors say that between October 2010 and June 2017, Correia wrote unauthorized checks to herself and deposited checks that were made out to cash in her personal account. The thefts were uncovered by the victim during an audit after the business closed, authorities say.

"It is alleged that (Correia) took advantage of the trust placed in her by Yukikiaze Auto to line her own pockets with more than $175,000 of the business's money," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. "Fortunately, Yukikiaze Auto uncovered the alleged thefts and alerted authorities."

Correia's next court appearance is scheduled for July 16.
