Alert body shop staff tip police to vehicle suspected in deadly hit and run
The vehicle suspected of striking and killing a 22-year-old Glenview man early Saturday near Vernon Hills was located after a tip from alert staff at a Wheeling body shop.
The vehicle was seized by the Lake County sheriff's office and is being processed for evidence, sheriff's Lt. Chris Covelli said. Further information was not provided as the investigation continues.
According to Lake County Sheriff's police, employees at the unidentified repair shop called authorities after seeing damage on an AudiQ5.
The employees had seen news reports and social media posts regarding the hit and run, according to Covelli. Authorities put out a public call last week for information on the vehicle, stating where the likely damage would be.
Wojciech Glowik was walking on the 200 block of Route 45 in Indian Creek about 2:10 a.m. Saturday when he was struck.
Sheriff's deputies found Glowik unconscious and critically injured. He died Monday at Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he was taken after the crash.
Police at the time asked anyone seeing new damage to the front of a white Audi SUV to call investigators.
Body shop employees this week thought the damaged 2014 AudiQ5 was the vehicle involved in the fatal hit and run and contacted sheriff's police, Covelli said.
Investigators found the damage consistent with the vehicle that fled, as pieces left at the scene matched the vehicle in the body shop, he added.
"I am incredibly thankful for the alert and honest staff at the auto repair shop," Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said in a news release.
"They played an integral role in us being able to process the vehicle for evidence and advance our investigation," he added. "Our condolences go to the friends and family of Mr. Glowik and we will do everything in our power to seek justice in this case."
