Community invited to groundbreaking events
The District 2 Board of Education invites parents, students, staff and community members to join in
celebrating the groundbreaking for additions at Tioga and Johnson Schools.
• Tioga School groundbreaking will be at 5 p.m. May 3 and
• W.A. Johnson groundbreaking is planned for 5 p.m. May 6.
This $48 million project is a milestone for the community – one that celebrates a promising future for
the children of Bensenville and the community as a whole.
When all phases of both projects are complete, District 2 will close the doors at Chippewa School,
originally built as a high school in 1927 and Tioga School, its 81-year-old neighboring elementary school.
We will also move out of Mohawk School, an undersized, deteriorating school more than 50 years old.
The project is funded by:
• $29 million in low-interest Build America Bonds that will be paid back over 25 to 30 years from the general
fund.
• $8.3 million state grant through the Illinois Capital Development Board, used to fund school buildings for
inadequately housed students
• $2.7 million in O'Hare Modernization Plan funds the district received
• $500,000 from the Village of Bensenville as surplus funds from the large downtown redevelopment TIF funds.
There will be a short ceremony, including a student performance, and light refreshments will be served.
Architectural drawings and other details of the project will also be on display.
