Robbery locks down Streamwood H.S. during basketball game

Players and fans at Tuesday night's Streamwood High School boys basketball game were locked in the gym for about 20 minutes beginning near the end of the game due to a nearby robbery.

The school was placed on lockdown with about 3:44 left in the team's game versus Hoffman Estates after the suspect in the robbery ran through the school's parking lot, according to coaches.

“You worry about the kids first of all. Your first thought is security for the kids and obviously the people in the building,” said Hoffman Estates coach Luke Yanule.

Police confirmed the school was placed on lockdown “for the public's safety,” but would not confirm the robbery had taken place.

Streamwood coach Tim Jones said no one was allowed in or out of the gym because a suspect had robbed the Subway near the intersection of Schaumburg Road and Route 59 and had run through the school's parking lot.

The lockdown was lifted about midway through Hoffman Estates coach Yanule's postgame talk in the locker room.

“We were safe and they told us were safe,” he said after the game. “It does put it in perspective a little bit ... there are bigger things than a high school basketball game.”
