Striving for Sustainability
STRIVING FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Striving for Sustainability, the first of three discussions, will be held Thursday, June 28, 7-8:30 p.m. St. Paul United Church of Christ, 401 East Main Street, Barrington.
We've all noticed a change in Chicago weather. What do the climatologists say? What does the data show? Recently, Tom Skilling and Dr. Don Wuebbles of U of I, spoke at the Chicago Botanic Garden, and they say weather will be changing in the Midwest. By the turn of the next century, Chicago could have the climate of Houston, Texas. What would that mean, in terms of water? More and different bugs? Storms? Great Lakes levels? Agriculture?
Many businesses are beginning to invest huge amounts of money to mitigate strategies for water and climate change. The focus is on “managing the avoidable, and avoiding the unmanageable.” Area units of government are investing in future planning, too.
Join us as we look at the data, the best projections for what is going on, how our communities, counties and regions (such as the Chicago area's own Metropolitan Action Plan, “Go to 2040”) are planning for the future. Find out what you can do, and how sustainability is a lot more than climate change.
Sessions will be facilitated by Faye Sinnott, a longtime business and education consultant, and everyone interested is invited to come. Resources for learning more about sustainable living will be shared and discussed. If you have questions, please call Deb Weaver, St. Paul UCC, 847-381-0460.
