Conant nets sweep at Lake Park
Seniors Briana Cavin and Shannon O’Connor picked up the wins Saturday as the Conant softball team improved to 8-1 with a nonconference doubleheader sweep at Lake Park.
Cavin struck out nine and walked two to record a 6-5 triumph in Game 1.
Top hitters for Conant were freshman Elisa Ambrose (2-for-3, 3 RBI), sophomore Rachel O’Malley (2-for-3, walk, 2 RBI) and senior Allie Bauch, who doubled.
O’Malley (3-for-5, 3 RBI) and Miranda Cavin (2-for-3, 2 walks, 2 RBI) each homered and sophomore Telly Hunter tripled in the Cougars’ 9-3 win in Game 2.
O’Connor (1-0) went the first 3 innings without a walk to get the win.
Briana Cavin (7-1) pitched the final 4 innings, striking out three and walking one.
Other top hitters were Bauch (3-for-3) and Kim Jacobson (3-for-5, RBI). Sam Pincenti and Megan Reff also singled for the Cougars.
Barrington 13, Bradford (Wis.) 3 (5 inn.): Junior Tess Bolger’s 3-run homer to left eiht one out in the bottom of the third gave the Fillies (10-2) the lead for good at 5-3 against the perennial Wisconsin state power (2-1).
Bolger finished 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI whole junior Loren Krzysko was 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and 2 walks.
The Fillies trailed 3-2 when senior Emma Woods (3-0) took the mound and went the final 2 innings to get the win. She did not walk a batter while giving up 2 hits and striking out two.
Hersey sweeps Stevenson: The Huskies won the opener 7-4 as Alex Tinaglia belted a home run and double.
Teammate Angela Schmiederer also homered while Michele Bolker (3-3) was the winning pitcher and had a double.
In Game 2, Hersey (6-4) rallied from 10-7 deficit by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth and 1 in the fifth.
Angela Lazzeretti earned the win for the Huskies.
Palatine quad: Palatine recorded 15 hits and defeated Jacobs 13-7 in the first game.
Grace Rohrwasser (3-for-5, 3 Runs; 2 stolen bases), Tori Walzak (2-for-2; 2 runs, 1 stolen base), Lauren Logan (4-for-5; 3 runs; 3 RBI), Megan Hedstrom (3-for-5; 1 double; 1 triple, 3 runs; 4 RBI, 1 stolen base), Courtney English (2-for-4, 1 double; 1 run; 2 RBI) and Kristin Rossi (1-for-2; 1 RBI) led the Pirates’ offense.
Hedstrom (5-3) earned the win by tossing a 5-hitter with 6 strikeouts.
Glenbrook North stopped the Pirates 9-1 in Game 2 as Kaileigh Moertl (1-for-2, 1 triple; 1 run) had the only hit for Palatine (7-5).
Pirates pitcher Jules Udoni (2-2) struck out four in 6 innings.
Jacobs also defeated Leyden 8-1 as the Eagles left 10 runners on base and Morgan Maize (8-3) suffered the loss.
Glenbrook North topped Leyden (10-3) and Maize (8-3) in the first, pounding out 13 hits.
Downers Grove North sweeps Prospect: Downers Grove North won both games 7-0 at Doerhofer Park in Downers Grove.
In Game 1, DGN pitcher, Elaine Heflin threw a perfect game.
“We swung at a lot of bad pitches,” said Knights coach Jim Adair.
In Game 2, Downers Grove kept up the dominant pitching with Dale Ryndak, who allowed only 2 hits (Hanna Lythberg and Stephanie Sofinski).
Prospect struck out 29 times in the twin bill.
“We’re not hitting right now, but we’ll get there and we’ll come together as a team,” Adair said. “What we didn’t need to do was run into two great pitchers, and that’s exactly what happened.”
Lythberg (2-4) and Jill Sadowski (1-3) took the losses for the Knights (3-7).
St. Charles East sweep Fremd: St Charles East shortstop Lexi Perez laced a two-out, two-run double — her fifth hit of the game — to give the Saints a thrilling 7-6 victory in 9 innings and hand Fremd its first loss of the season.
St. Charles East (7-4) rode that momentum to a doubleheader sweep, beating Fremd 6-3 in Game 2.
The Saints (7-4) had the first chance to close out the first game with two outs in the seventh and holding a 5-3 lead. But Fremd first baseman Michelle Mazur had other ideas, lofting a fly ball over the fence in straightaway center for a 2-run home run to tie the game.
“Quality at-bat in that situation,” Fremd coach Jim Weaver said of Mazur’s second home run of the season. Mazur later hit her third home run in the second game.
Mazur led Fremd going 4-for-5. Untiedt had 3 hits and Ashlynne Schwantz 2.
“St. Charles East outplayed us flat out from the beginning of the game until the end,” Weaver said. “They wanted the game worse than we did.”
Haley Beno (3-3) earned the win in Game 2, scattering 11 hits. Mazur gave Fremd a 2-0 lead with her homer in the first, but the Saints took control with three runs in the second on a bases-clearing double to left center by Collalti.
Kristine Herdegen also homered for Fremd in the fifth. Senior Rachel Doering (5-1) and junior Schwantz (4-1) took the losses for Fremd.
Lake Zurich 5, Buffalo Grove 4: Host Lake Zurich (5-7) scored 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Bison (4-6).
