No merit to hazmat call at Schaumburg High School
Firefighters found no hazardous conditions during an approximately two-hour hazmat call at Schaumburg High School, which was not in session Friday afternoon.
Schaumburg police Sgt. John Nebl said a concrete contractor was taking advantage of the off day at the school to raise a floor on the lower level of the building at 1100 W. Schaumburg Road.
In order to do so, the workers were pumping in a product at the building. But they then began to smell a chemical odor, similar to chlorine, not usually present during such work, Nebl said.
Firefighters were called at about 1 p.m. and declared it a level 2 hazmat incident, bringing in assistance from several nearby departments.
Units began to disperse at about 3:10 p.m., having found no source for the reported odor and no hazardous conditions in the building, he said.
