WINGS holds events to celebrate Women’s History Month

WINGS, or Women in Need Growing Stronger, will hold a series of events in March to celebrate both Women’s History Month and all the women who have sought its services over the years.

The Palatine-based nonprofit organization, which exists to help women move from abuse and homelessness, will kick things off with an After Hours sale at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at the WINGS Palatine Resale Store, 1315 N. Rand Road.

The sale will feature high-end and designer clothing, new jewelry and goods by author and entertainer Victor Pacini, who lost his sister to domestic violence. For each item purchased, Pacini will donate a similar item to a woman living in the WINGS shelter, homes and apartments.

The sale is free and registration is required by emailing blabeots@wingsprogram.com.

On Sunday, March 4, WINGS will host its 5th Annual Resale Fashion Show at the Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows. Along with a boutique filled with designer fashions and accessories, the event will feature WINGS graduates, resale customers and community members in a fashion show filled with unique fashions from WINGS resale stores.

The event will feature shoes created by Chicago-based shoe designer James Sommerfeldt, who will be in attendance. His designs have been seen on the Lifetime TV show, “Project Accessory.”

WINGS also is partnering with state Rep. Fred Crespo of Hoffman Estates and the Streamwood Woman’s Club for the 2012 Women’s History Month Poster Contest, which is open to all ages and genders.

Entries should be created around this year’s theme, “Women’s Education — Women’s Empowerment,” and what it means to them. Posters must be submitted by March 19 to Crespo’s constituent service office, 1014 E. Schaumburg Road, Streamwood. Members from WINGS and Crespo’s Women’s Advisory Committee will select five posters to be put on display in the state Capitol.

Finally, WINGS will hold donation drives for its resale stores at locations including Steinmart in Kildeer and Wells Fargo in Palatine.
