Illinois Transportation Secretary announces more than $500,000 for new multi-use trail in Woodridge and Lisle

On Oct. 29, Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig announced the award of $514,700 in transportation enhancement funds to construct a multi-use trial located in Woodridge and south Lisle. The announcement took place at Summerhill Drive just west of Route 53 in Woodridge. The trail, titled the East Branch DuPage River Greenway Trail, will connect Benedictine College in Lisle to the Seven Bridges Development in Woodridge.

Woodridge Mayor Bill Murphy was in attendance at the presentation along with approximately 30 people. "This is a great project that will benefit many people," said Mayor Murphy. “The trail will provide much needed access to Seven Bridges from the North and will join together two trail systems; offering people an excellent recreational opportunity.”

The funding comes from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP), a federally funded program designed to improve the quality of life in Illinois by promoting alternative transportation, such as bike and pedestrian travel, streetscape beautification, and preserving transportation resources.

The project includes the construction of a 10-foot wide, 5.4 mile asphalt multi-use trail. The new trail will be located along a corridor west of Route 53 and east of the East Branch of DuPage River near Seven Bridges commercial complex and Four Lakes residential community. The trail also will connect to the existing Maple Avenue Bridge, Benedictine Connector Trail, Southern DuPage County Regional Trail and the 1,425-acre Greene Valley Forest Preserve. This trail is part of the 31-mile East Branch DuPage River Greenway Trail, which is currently under development.
