Library fills vacancy: The Gail Borden Public Library Board unanimously appointed Herb Gross to fill a vacancy on the board created when Jessica Thompson stepped down in June because she moved out of the district. Gross, a retired psychologist, served as a trustee from 2007 through 2009, when he lost a re-election bid. "We are pleased to have Mr. Gross back on the board," said board President Rick McCarthy. "He has proven to be a valuable member of the board in the past. We thank others who applied for this opening and we encourage them to run for election next (spring)." Gross' term ends in 2013.Bike ride rescheduled: The Lake in the Hills Wellness Family Bike Ride that was to have taken place on Friday, July 23, was rescheduled to Friday, Aug. 20, due to high temperature and humidity levels. It will take place at Ken Carpenter Park on the corner of Randall and Miller Roads at 6:30 p.m.Kids' garage sale:The Cary Park District is organizing a kids garage sale that encourages local children to make money selling their unwanted stuff. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 14, in Lions Park, and each kid will be assigned a parking space from which to sell his or her items. Preregistration is required and costs $9 for residents, $14 for people who don't live in Cary. Unwanted items should include toys, games and books. Participants get an 8-foot by 8-foot space on the Faith Community Church lawn, 10547 Faith Way, Huntley. It costs $20 to register for each day or $35 to register for both. Lunch will be provided for participants. Bring your own tables and chairs. Register at the church or call (224) 569-6501 to request a form to register by mail. You can also donate items that the food pantry will sell during the garage sale. Proceeds from the event benefit the food pantry.Volunteers for recycling:Kane County is seeking adult volunteers to assist with its electronics recycling program. Volunteers are needed to help unload electronics equipment such as computers, televisions, and telephones from the public's vehicles. The program operates on the second Friday and Saturday of each month at the Circuit Clerk building on Randall Road in St. Charles.
