Your news: Plan underway for the 'Tour De Des Plaines' bike ride
Submitted by: Karen Kozenczak, city of Des Plaines
Due to the success of last year's city-wide bike ride, Des Plaines Mayor Martin J. Moylan, the police department and the Des Plaines Park District have begun to make plans for the second annual Tour De Des Plaines.
This year's event, which will involve a 12.5-mile bicycle ride through the city's eight wards, will begin and end at Lake Park, Howard and Touhy Ave., and will be held in conjunction with the Fall Fest, Saturday, Sept 18.
There is no fee to participate in the Tour De Des Plaines, but registration and a helmet is necessary. Helmets will be available for purchase at the registration site which will open at 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Lake Park Golf Club House. Everyone with a bicycle is invited to join Des Plaines Mayor Martin J. Moylan, Police Chief Jim Prandini and executive director of the Des Plaines Parks John Hecker in the Tour De Des Plaines. The ride will leave at 9 a.m. and will last approximately two hours.
The bike route will include check points in each of the city's eight wards. Water will be provided. Everyone is welcome! You can ride the entire 12.5-mile or stop at any point. The course will begin and end at Fall Fest which is a three-day, family event, sponsored by the Des Plaines Park District, the History Center, and the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The event offers food, beverages, beer, an open air market, carnival rides, games, a KidZone, a country fair, lots of musical entertainment and more!
"We hope that everyone who likes to ride a bicycle will come out and participate in the Tour De Des Plaines. Bring a friend and join in the fun as we celebrate Des Plaines with this great community bike ride and, afterwards, enjoy Fall Fest. It's a weekend you won't want to miss," Des Plaines Mayor Martin J. Moylan said.
