Magazine sellers have been popular, with 123 complaints during the last year, an increase of 46 percent increase over the previous one-year period, according to Steve Bernas, president and CEO. He said appealing to a potential buyer's emotion is a very common technique of many door-to-door sales people causing consumers to let down their guard. Phrases like: 'You'd be helping feed children,' or 'Your support would help pay for my schooling' are typical pitches, Bernas added. He said it is typical for door-to-door sales people to look clean cut and try to present themselves as honest and hard working. Consumers should check www.bbb.org to check a company's rating before buying or for advice on how to protect yourself from scams.
