'Sounds of Schools' features student musicians
Daily Herald report
“Sounds of the Schools” — featuring instrumental and vocal groups from schools in Warrenville, Wheaton and Elmhurst — takes center stage at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at IBEW Local 701, 28600 Bella Vista Parkway, Warrenville.
The groups performing include middle school, high school and college students.
The Four Winds Waldorf School Orchestra in Warrenville includes two performing groups with students from sixth and seventh grades. The school integrates the arts throughout the curriculum based upon the philosophy that participation enriches thinking skills and cooperative learning.
Orchestra director Honna Austin joined the faculty at Four Winds in 2008, and holds a master of fine arts degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and a Suzuki teaching certificate from Ithaca College. Honna has taught privately for more than 12 years.
Wheaton Warrenville South High School presents two a cappella vocal ensembles, Those Guys and Remember the Girls. Although both groups are in their first year of existence, they have quickly become two of the most sought after groups for community events, organizations and various businesses. Their repertoire is drawn from pop, jazz and contemporary arrangements.
Their director, Gordon Krauspe, has taught 25 years at Wheaton Warrenville South, where he conducts the Chamber Singers, Concert Chorale, Varsity Women's Chorale and the Men's Chorale, as well as teaching rock 'n' roll history.
The Elmhurst College Jazz Band has gained international acclaim as an outstanding collegiate jazz ensemble. Under the direction of Doug Beach, the band has received outstanding ratings at jazz festivals, toured 17 nations and twice has received invitations from the U.S. State Department to tour Europe.
Beach's career has encompassed many facets of the music world, including performer, publisher, teacher, clinician and adjudicator. He is the founder of Doug Beach Music, one of the leading publishers of educational jazz music in the world today.
Among his many awards is a Grammy for the New York Voices recording of his arrangement of “Cottontail.”
Tickets to the concert, available at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors 60 and older.
