Scouting Conant at Fremd

Conant (2-6, 0-4) at Fremd (4-4, 3-1)

When: 7:30 p.m. today at Hale Hildebrandt Field

Last week: Conant lost to Hoffman Estates 17-14; Fremd d. Barrington 26-12

Outlook: Fremd is trying to become the first MSL team since Palatine in 1990 to recover from a 1-4 start to extend league-record streaks of playoff trips to 16 and outright or shared division titles to eight. “We've showed them enough positive clips of Conant against teams we've played against and struggled against,” said Fremd coach Mike Donatucci. “They're not a bad team.” And nothing would be better for the Cougars than to end a rough stretch of six losses here. “In some ways we're fortunate to have that opportunity to redeem ourselves,” said Conant coach Bill Modelski, “and take a crack at it and maybe be the one.” Which would be ironic a week after being on the wrong end as Hoffman ended a 23-game losing streak. Conant QB Matt Cullen (1,012 yards, 6 TDs) and RB Cordell Smith have had solid moments offensively. Fremd RB-LB Justin Wallace (937 yards, 8 TDs) looks surpass 1,000 yards and freshman QB Sam Beutler has thrown for 570 yards with 6 TDs and no interceptions. Fremd has won the last six meetings of a series tied at 13-13.
