Fremd rebounds to beat Conant

Fremd’s boys basketball team had a rough start in its latest stop in a rugged stretch as it visited Mid-Suburban West leader Conant on Friday night.

But the Vikings fought back for a 49-46 victory and now are part of a four-way tie for the West lead at 3-1 with the Cougars, Barrington and Schaumburg.

Adam Gorecki scored a team-high 12 points and Garrett Peters added 11 points as Fremd (10-6) snapped a four-game losing streak. Conant (8-7) lost its third straight after taking a 16-9 lead after a quarter as junior Robert Hudson (14 points) hit three of his four 3-pointers.

Fremd led 23-22 at halftime but Conant took a 37-36 lead late in the third quarter.

Peters got a steal as time was running out and was fouled as he attempted a 3 with one second left in the third. He hit 2 free throws for a 38-37 lead the Vikings never lost.

Fremd increased its lead to 46-41 with 1:32 left but a 3 by Tim Manczko cut the Conant deficit to 47-46.

Sophomore Riley Glassman (6 points), who missed the last two games with a back injury, hit 2 free throws with 18 seconds left. A 3-point attempt by Conant was on line but hit the rim as time expired.

Sean Benka added 7 points and Nate Serviss grabbed 8 rebounds for the Vikings. They play at West Suburban Gold power Downers Grove South at 7 p.m. Monday and travel to Barrington next Saturday.

Conant travels to Elk Grove for an MSL crossover at 6 p.m. today and is at Schaumburg next Friday.

Leyden 57, Willowbrook 37: Omar Lazoya hit four 3s and scored a team-high 12 points for Leyden (9-4, 2-2) in the West Suburban Gold victory in Villa Park.

Alex Herrera scored 11 points and hit three 3s and made both of his free throws to move closer to the program record for consecutive free throws made. Herrera has made his last 28 attempts and the record is 30 by former Boston Celtics coach Jimmy Rodgers in 1960 for East Leyden.

Jonny Woolf also scored 11 points as the Eagles led 32-16 at halftime and 45-24 after three quarters. They host Downers Grove South next Friday.

Christian Liberty 42, Luther North 32: Christian Liberty (9-5, 2-1) found its offense with a 20-point fourth quarter in the Northeastern Athletic Conference victory at Grace Gym in Arlington Heights.

The Chargers trailed 24-22 after three quarters but rallied for their sixth consecutive victory. Luke Comerouski had a team-high 13 points, Mike Hennek scored 12 points and Kyle Moriarty added 10 points and was 8-for-10 on free throws.

Christian Liberty hosts Rockford Christian Life on Tuesday.

Barrington-Meadows makeup: The MSL crossover between Barrington and host Rolling Meadows has been rescheduled for Feb. 7. The game was postponed Tuesday because of concerns regarding the smell from Meadows’ new gym floor.
